Falling in love is easy. Keeping the sizzle in your marriage? That's more like grilling the perfect steak-it takes time, attention, and some secret spices. Mastering your wife's heart doesn't have to be complicated, but it will take a little effort. Good intentions alone will not get the job done. Gary Chapman gears this edition of his #1 New York Times multi-million best seller to your needs, challenges, and interests as a husband.

The following is a review of Dr. Gary Chapman’s “The 5 Love Languages for Men” by my husband.  I’ll give you a hint – he liked it!  Hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine’s Day celebrating those they love!

When I married my wife, the pastor that performed the ceremony gave us a copy of Gary Chapman’s original book, The 5 Love Languages.  My wife and I both read it and loved it.  Now, I am honored to be given the opportunity to review a retooled edition of The 5 Love Languages geared specifically for men.  The original 5 languages remain the same, words of affirmation, quality time, gift giving, acts of service, and physical touch; however, this new edition, The 5 Love Languages For Men, focuses on strengthening your marriage through learning to speak your wife’s primary love language.

After the obligatory introductory chapter, the first half of the book focuses and elaborates on each of the 5 love languages.  The book for me slowed down at the beginning of the second half with Chapter 7, “What Languages Do You Speak?” and Chapter 8, “Troubleshooting.”  Both of these chapters still contain good information, but did not move as fast for me as the beginning of the book.  However, the following chapters highlight how to work through anger and how to apologize and enable the book to end with a bang.  I think every husband should read Chapters 9 and 10, since working through anger and learning how to apologize can uplift any relationship.

The book concludes with a Frequently Asked Questions section and The 5 Love Languages Profiles for both him and her.  Each profile contains 30 questions to be answered by your spouse and reveals their primary and secondary love language.  Chapters 2 through 6 contain a 2 page phrase book for each love language to help us (men) speak that particular language.  These phrase books are well thought out and quickly become the highlight of the chapter.  Each chapter also has key sentences already bolded.  I particularly liked this approach as it pulled out the important concepts and helped focus my attention on what needed to be emphasized.

Overall, the book is a quick read at less than 190 pages.  Throw in some charts, illustrations, and cartoons, and you have yourself a very quick read (and I’m not a fast reader).  The illustrations were informative, but somewhat redundant given the reading material.  The only real complaint I have with the book (and it’s minor) is I wish the love profiles were presented at the beginning.  Having read a previous edition, I knew to look for them, but someone new to the book may do the reading before realizing that the profiles will help narrow down the languages on which to focus.

I would recommend this book to any husband, period.  If you are trying to work through issues you may have with your wife or trying to reinvigorate your marriage, or you are a new husband and would just like to understand your new wife a little better (we can all smile at that one) then this book will help.  I’m not saying it will solve all of your problems, but if read, taken to heart, and the advice within followed on a consistent basis, then the relationship with your wife will improve and begin to blossom into something beautiful that will enhance both of you.
